The Beyond 2015 campaign has been quite the appropriate engagement for PIANGO and its network as the project fittingly culminates the ‘rethinking’ process that is currently undertaken. The post-2015 MDGs will ultimately steer the development agenda for the region and influence our governments on their set goals for post-2015.
In March of 2014, PIANGO’s Programmes Coordinator – Laisa Vereti attended a meeting in Pretoria, South Africa where the Regional Coordinators of the campaign and the secretariat met to finalise the ‘values and targets’ that this campaign would effectively lobby in the respective regions. Out of this meeting, five (5) priority countries were identified to conduct activities with two (2) Supportive States for each region. Through this campaign as well, the Pacific has been successfully disassociated from the usual Asia-Pacific grouping as a region and stands as a region on its own to manage its activities in this project. The five priority countries are Fiji, Samoa, Kiribati, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea.
The Beyond 2015 Campaign also recently conducted meetings in Brussels in June to assess the campaign’s development and update each of the five regions engaged in the process on global issues and the developments in New York in the lead up to the September UN Conference and this was attended by PIANGO’s Communications Coordinator – Joji Fatiaki. The project has since gained momentum in the global processes and calls for the regions to actively engage with their governments and key persons to advocate the values and targets for B2015 to influence the goals as we head the final 12 months of the campaign.
